Microplastics and human exposure.

A growing area of research — and a largely unmeasured part of everyday life.

WHAT ARE MICROPLASTICS?

Microplastics are small plastic particles, typically less than 5mm in size.

They form as larger plastic materials break down over time — through heat, light, and physical wear.

They’ve now been identified across water, food systems, and air.

Which means exposure is not isolated.

It’s continuous.

WHERE EXPOSURE COMES FROM

Plastics are among the most widely produced materials on earth. As they degrade, particles disperse into surrounding environments — and accumulate within the organisms that inhabit them.

      The challenge of measurement

Microplastics are present not only in the environment — but also in the spaces where testing occurs.

Air, surfaces, and materials can all introduce contamination during collection and analysis. This makes accurate measurement technically complex.

Because of this, how a test is designed plays a critical role in the reliability of its results.

Controlling for environmental interference, maintaining consistency in handling, and ensuring structured analysis are all essential.

Without this, results may not accurately reflect true exposure.

      Understand Your Exposure

As research continues to evolve, the ability to measure environmental exposure at an individual level becomes increasingly relevant.

Understanding what is present is the first step toward understanding what it means.
